Working Towards a Sustainable Community with Urban Gardening

Urban gardening, the cultivation of food in cities, significantly contributes to sustainable food production. Despite its importance, these gardens often lack visibility. At IUPUI, with a student population of 29,000, social media visibility is only 6%, and sustainability newsletters go unnoticed.

Farmily, developed as part of my Master's in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) program, addresses this issue. It's a mobile app focused on enhancing engagement, awareness, and accessibility of sustainable practices, particularly urban gardening, in the community.

A garden requires patient labor and attention. Plants do not grow merely to satisfy ambitions or to fulfill good intentions. They thrive because someone expended effort on them.

The identified problem area revolves around leveraging technology to amplify involvement, awareness, and accessibility in sustainable practices, particularly urban gardening, within the community. Our group's interviews and secondary research underscored significant challenges and opportunities:

CHALLENGES

Widespread lack of awareness and education hampers the success of sustainability initiatives.

Urban gardeners face challenges due to limited space for cultivation, acting as a barrier to sustainable practices.

Individuals were uncertain about how to actively participate in sustainability initiatives.

OPPORTUNITIES

Urban gardens contribute significantly to communities by addressing the escalating demand for food in cities, offering a sustainable solution to this challenge.

Urban farming offers promising public benefits and has the potential to decrease consumer costs, providing affordable access to organic food.

Urban farming plays a pivotal role in diminishing the environmental impact of city architecture, lowering food miles, and enhancing energy efficiency.

Disseminate awareness and knowledge about sustainability and urban gardening.

Steer users toward proactive, sustainable practices, fostering behavioral changes for a greener lifestyle.

Enhance accessibility to resources, motivating users to embark on their green practices.

Having identified the challenges, it was now time to devise a solution. We conducted multiple brainstorming sessions, developed user personas, crafted storyboards to empathize with users, and mapped out the user journey and information architecture.
